How You Should Be Storing Your Old Home Movies:

Published

on

Technology Has Changed The Game

Unless you can maintain equipment designed for physical film, you’re going to have to think about digital options for your old home movies. When it comes to 8mm film, videos, and betamax formats, most new technology can’t interface.

Digital tech incorporates new means of storing and playing moving images. Here we’ll cover a few storage strategies to help you retain your old footage into the future.

1. Solid State Drives And Hard Disk Drives

Most new computers use a Solid State Drive or SSD. Some computers still use a Hard Disk Drive or HDD, but these aren’t as efficient or reliable over the long term owing to an increase in moving parts.

HDDs have a little disk that actually spins, and is subject to physical disturbance. If you’ve got an HDD, and you drop it or bump it wrong, it may break. Here’s a closer look at the two hard drive options.

While you can similarly break an SSD, that’s less likely, as these drives are more like a USB thumb drive. Essentially, there aren’t moving parts involved in storage. This means SSDs work both faster and more reliably over the long term. So if you’ve transferred the video to HDD drives, you’ll likely want to transfer that footage to an SSD eventually.

While this isn’t immediately necessary, it’s something to think about. Footage stored on CD-ROM or floppy disks is footage you may not even be able to view for the same reason the analog film is hard to upkeep and view. Technological formats have changed. So once you’ve transferred footage, if it’s not on some sort of SSD, you’ll likely have to transfer it again.

2. Transferring Film To Digital Formats

Before you put the film on an SSD or an HDD, you’ll want to get it transferred to a digital format. There are a number of different ways to do this, one of the most popular beings is to put the footage on a Digital Video Disk, or DVD. From there, you can transfer it to an SSD or HDD for long-term storage.

Your computer may have an SSD or HDD built-in, but owing to the size of video files, it’s a good idea to have a hard drive external to your device for more secure long-term storage. That said, first, you’ve got to digitize the film, and there are a few ways to do that.

To convert “super 8” film to DVD requires a little bit of experience. The same is true of videotape footage, though it’s a bit easier to transfer footage from a VHS tape to a DVD with a simple conversion rig that features VHS and DVD slots. If you’re going the “super 8” route, you may need a projector or specialized equipment. It’s more cost-effective to use a service.

3. Keeping Data Alive In The Cloud

Another move beyond SSD, HDD, or DVD formats is uploading your video footage to the cloud. Now there are some benefits and drawbacks to this approach. On the one hand, you’ve got better security in storage owing to the onus of cloud providers to securely maintain the data on clients. On the other, you’re trusting private information with such public providers.

As a data backup, in the event, some catastrophe destroys physical copies of your 8mm film, or your DVDs, or your HDD or SDD drives, the cloud is a good safeguard as you can rest assured precious memories are preserved. Ostensibly, there’s no legal avenue for abuse of that data. However, there is the human nature component to consider.

Accordingly, though the cloud is an option for some private information, it may be wiser to transfer that information to a DVD, and then transfer such data from the DVD to an SSD you keep in a safe, dry, temperate environment somewhere—like a basement closet safe from the elements, or something of the kind.

Keeping Precious Memories Alive

Switching 8mm footage to DVD, putting such footage on SSD drives, and exploring cloud computing storage options represent three wise ways to assure old footage is retained into the future.

Certainly, keep the old 8mm reels and VHS tapes around as well; but media to read them is disappearing, and physical footage succumbs to decay easier than digital options. Since tech keeps marching on, and digital storage has superior aspects, it’s smart to at least store your footage in this way as well.

5 Tips for Computer Use That Will Help You Be More Productive

Published

on

Using a computer is a lot like playing an instrument or a sport–the better you are, the better the end result.

Despite the fact that computers have been around for over two decades now, some people still aren’t making the most productive use of them.

Why Continuous Learning Matters

Many people, after figuring out the basic features of their computer simply stop and don’t make an effort to learn advance uses.

This often causes them to miss out on a lot of great tools and resources that can make them more proficient and productive when it comes to computer use.

Understanding the real possibilities of your PC is in your best interest.

Windows PCs are still among the most commonly purchased. Despite the growing popularity of iPhones and iPads, Mac-based desktop computers are less common to see in the home or business environment.

Not only are PCs more universal, but they are typically more affordable for both businesses and consumers.

To that end, we’ll be discussing the best tips for improving your Windows-based PC skills for your own benefit.

#1 Learn the Advanced Usage of Common Tasks

Take the time to develop a deeper understanding of Windows PCs, including the Windows 10 operating system and potential issues that could arise.

You don’t have to become an IT pro, by any means, but you should learn as much as you can about what to expect from your own PC to foster productivity.

Take the time to go through the Windows tutorial (yes, those are created for a reason).

Guides and tutorials focused on specific features help people learn advanced usage and setup.

Some examples of these are:

  • How to skip the required password on login
  • How to connect your phone with Windows
  • How to set up a PIN instead of a password for your account
  • How to set up focus assist
  • How to set up the night light

If there’s a specific task or computer process that you want to speed up or make it more efficient, do some research to see how you can set it up.

After all, the largest part of being productive isn’t just about having the right tools for the job, but also knowing how to set them up and use them efficiently.

#2 Use Keyboard Shortcuts and Taskbar Pins to Save Clicks

You probably already use some shortcuts, or maybe you have a few important programs pinned to the taskbar for easy access.

Keep going.

The more shortcuts you learn, the easier your daily computer use will be.

Instead of having to wait for things to load or try to scroll through endless menus, you can be ready with just a keystroke or two.

Here are a few popular shortcuts that everyone should know:

  • Windows Key + D: Minimize or restore all open windows
  • Windows Key + Tab: Opens Task View
  • Windows Key + PrtScn: Screenshot, which is saved in Pictures folder
  • ALT + TAB: Easy window or program switching
  • Alt + Shift: Switch between input languages if using several input methods
  • CTRL + Text Shortcuts: Holding CTRL, the following keys will create the respective commands:
    • C – Copy
    • X- Cut
    • Z – Undo
    • V – Paste
    • Shift + V – Paste without formatting

Taskbar pins, also known as shortcuts, are also fairly popular among Windows PC users.

The programs and applications that you use most often can be pinned to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen for easy access.

Then, they can be opened with one click instead of chasing them down through a variety of menus.

In addition, if you right-click them, you can access the most recent files for each and even pin often accessed files for easy access.

If you do a lot of word processing and internet browsing, for example, you’ll want to have your internet browser and MS Word (or other word processing program) pinned.

#3 Customize Your Start Menu

The Windows 10 start menu, like all menus, is designed to work for you.

You can customize this menu, choosing which icons and programs are displayed based on the frequency of use or by getting rid of programs and things that you don’t use.

You’re not just rearranging the list of starting menu items, though.

With the Windows 10 tile system, you can choose the things that appear on the start menu, resize and rearrange tiles, and even have live tiles (that will display news, weather or the newest emails right there on the tile).

#4 Use Windows Cleanup Tools

One of the biggest ways that you can increase your productivity and the performance of your PC is to keep it cleaned up.

If you do a lot of internet browsing or download a lot of temporary files, you need to cash in on the cleaning suite offered by Windows.

There is even a new feature known as Storage Sense, which can automatically remove unnecessary files based on a schedule that you set.

You can also invest in free third-party apps and programs that provide registry cleaning, which deletes unnecessary temp and broken file extensions, clears browsing history and cookies, and removes broken registry entries, which can all slow down your computer.

#5 Eliminate Distractions

For as many social media apps and websites as there are to waste your valuable time, there are just as many tracking and distraction-discouraging apps available to help you avoid the proverbial rabbit hole that most people fall into at least once or twice a day.

How many times have you taken “a break” to check the news or social media, only to emerge from the other side an hour later, having ended up somewhere completely different than where you started?

It’s easy to lose time when you’re surfing the web.

With tracking apps and tools like RescueTime that display exactly how much time you are wasting, you can keep yourself in check.

Many of these apps and programs even have warnings that you can set up and customize blocking features so that you can prevent yourself from wasting the day away.

It’s a lot easier to only spend five minutes checking Twitter if the site shuts down when the time is up, after all.

Keep your desk and your computer desktop uncluttered.

See those 18 tabs up above? Close as many of them as you possibly can.

For quick access to frequently used sites, use taskbar pins or desktop shortcuts instead.

Leaving browser tabs open is inviting distraction and can suck up a lot of the computer’s operating power.

Alternatively, you have some nifty add-ons like The Great Suspender that will suspend inactive tabs and free up processing power until you need them again.

When your computer starts lagging, your motivation won’t be far behind. Set yourself up for success by only opening windows that you need to be working on at the present moment.

In Summary

There are a lot of great productivity tips and tools out there.

If you’re looking to become a master with your Windows 10 PC, take advantage of the guides and resources that will teach you everything that you ever wanted to know about Windows so that you can customize it to work better for you.

Drone

Image from: https://stocksnap.io/photo/8F3FGRMKEY

In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know about flying drone safely.

Understand your responsibility

At first, you must understand that the drone is your responsibility. Hence, you must make sure that no one uses your drone to break the rules.

There are many rules that a drone owner must follow before flying a drone. You must understand that flying a drone is fun, but it is dangerous as well. If you fly your drone carelessly, it could damage the device. In the end, it could fall on someone’s property or a person. That could be harmful to the people.

By considering the risks that with drones, the FAA and AUVSI have made some rules for drone owners. So, you must read them out before you start flying the drone.

What are the FAA and AUVSI?

FAA stands for Federal Aviation Administration and AUVSI Association for Unmanned Vehicle System international. Once the organizations came to realize that flying drones could be harmful to people. They took the first step to set up some regulations for flying drones and started ” Know before you fly”. The entire campaign makes sure that people are aware of safety from flying drones.

At first, you must know that the rules may vary in different countries. In order to know what are the rules in your country, you will need to google them.

The rules for flying a Drone according to FAA and AUVSI

In order to make sure that drone flying is safe for everyone, the FAA has set some rules that everyone must follow. In the following paragraph, you can read the basic rules to make sure that you can fly drones safely.

  1. You must obtain a license before flying a drone.
  2. The drone owner should be at least 16 years old.
  3. You cannot fly a drone until you receive a remote pilot certificate, or at least fly a drone under supervision of someone who holds a remote pilot certificate.
  4. When flying a drone, it must avoid all sorts of aircraft at all cost.
  5. Drones cannot fly near airports.
  6. Drones have speed limitations, the maximum speed a drone can achieve is 100mph.
  7. The maximum height drones can reach is 400 feet. In case, someone is flying the drone on a tall building, the height restriction starts from that height to 400 feet above.
  8. When you are flying a drone, it must be on your sight all the time. Pick a place that gives a clear view of your drone. So, you can see where it is flying. Never let it out of your sight.
  9. In case if you are using First-person view technology, you need an additional observer who will keep an eye on your mini aircraft all the time.
  10. In a similar situation when an additional observer is watching the vehicle. You and the observer can watch only one drone at a time.
  11. Drones cannot fly in the dark. It must be set free in the air when there is daylight. If you are flying during twilight there must be extra anti-collision lighting for safety.

To be specific drones can fly around 30 minutes earlier than sunrise and 30 minutes later than sunset.

  1. Drones can carry objects as long as the total weight of the drone and the object is less than 55 lbs.
  2. If you have a drone that weighs more than 250 grams then you must register the drone with the FAA.

You cannot fly a drone if you are on a moving vehicle yourself. However, this rule is not mandatory is the user is on a crowdy area.

  1. Drones cannot fly above anyone except when:
The person is participating in drone operation
The person is sitting on a shaded vehicle
The person is under some shelter

Some of the rules may not apply to all drone owners. Under those circumstances, you can contact the FAA, to get the rules waiver for you. But there is no guarantee that you will get the rules off from you. One way to do this is to ensure them that your drone flying time will be safe for everyone even without those rules.

Now that you have read the rules you must understand that you have to collect a certificate and license to fly a drone. If you want to get a remote pilot certificate, then you can apply for one at FAA.

Receive Remote pilot certificate from FFA

The FFA gives the remote pilot certificate in two ways. First, if you already have a Part 61 (non-student certificate) or you have to apply for a written test.

How to get a permanent certificate with Part 61 certificate?

At first, if you have a Part 61(non-student) certificate, you can get a temporary certificate right away after application.

If other people want a temporary certificate, they will have to wait until their papers are checked thoroughly before they get a temporary certificate. The FAA authority says it takes around 10 days to complete the verification and issue a temporary certificate.

On the other hand, if you don’t have the Part 61 certificate you can sit for a written test at the testing center of the FAA.

In the paragraph above are the basic rules of how to fly a drone safety. There are additional rules and you have to search them on the internet to find out. The UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) is bringing classes for people. So, they can learn how to fly drone’s safety. In addition to the rules above, there are also rules to photo taken by a drone. Find out all the rules before you get a drone and fly it safely across the sky. Keeping it safe in the neighborhood is our responsibility. Especially if we want to fly a mini aircraft in the surroundings for any reason.

Does Managing IT In-House Cause Added Stress?

Published

on

Ipad Tablet Technology

Dealing with the never-ending (nuisance!) requests of business users is a constant complaint of IT teams. Resetting passwords, finding files that aren’t really lost, issuing an additional software license for a new user — all of these small requests take time away from moving the organization into the future. This type of maintenance work is definitely necessary, but should you be utilizing the best technology minds in your business to complete these low-level tasks? What happens when you need to engage these tech-savvy types with creating a strategic plan for integrations and upgrades? If they’re busy applying patches and doing daily tasks, they’re unlikely to have the mental capacity or time to contribute to the conversation. This causes a great deal of stress for your smart techies while also allowing business users to get frustrated because their requests are not receiving the quick response they demand.

Ipad Tablet Technology

Breaking the Cycle of Stress

This can feel like a never-ending cycle of frustration and stress, but there is a better way. When you work with an outsourced IT partner, you’re able to offload many of the day-to-day tasks that are pulling your internal IT team away from larger projects. These smaller distraction tasks can be handled quickly and efficiently from a remote Help Desk at a speed that your business users will certainly appreciate. With a trusted IT partner, you’re able to outsource just the items that are not an ideal fit for your internal workflow — from submitting and following up on support request tickets to proactively managing software licenses and cyber security.

Appropriately Leveraging External Talent

A key concern for CIOs in the future is finding the right talent to support their various initiatives, and it’s going to be difficult to source that wide range of talent internally. Small to mid-size businesses may be able to afford a single database administrator, AI expert or MarTech leader, but what happens when that individual becomes disgruntled and leaves the organization? Nine times out of ten, there is no backup for key internal staff members. Partnering with a team of technical support professionals gives you the bench depth and product knowledge that you need to maintain consistency and project velocity. Fill in the skills gap with a partner who has multiple staff members conversant with the platform you’re managing or implementing.

Creating a Workable Budget

Technology leaders have long been challenged with budgeting — from projects that run significantly over budget due to scope creep to unexpected expenses such as cleansing systems after a malware attack. One of the benefits of working with an IT managed services provider is that you can rest assured that your budget will stay consistent, especially if you take advantage of hardware-as-a-service models. Since pricing is based on either the number of users or the number of devices, budgeting becomes much more straightforward and allows IT leaders and finance professionals alike to relax their caution just a tad.

Planning for the Future

Running an IT department can make you feel like you are a hamster on a wheel, constantly reacting to an external stimulus. Not only does this make stress levels skyrocket for leaders and team members alike, but it can keep your group from being strategic, too. Plotting a roadmap for the future is a must due to the long timelines that accompany many integrations, upgrades or new software implementations. The support of a proactive IT partner can help alleviate the daily pressures and make space for vision-casting and creating a comprehensive IT roadmap for the future.

Throughout the country, IT teams are seeing the value of a centrally-managed IT department where many of the tasks are performed offsite or through a trusted partner. The outcome? More consistent processes and training for business users, controlled monthly and annual budgets and a more fulfilled staff of technical professionals.

How to check the battery life of an iPhone in 2019

Published

on

iphone battery

One of the main things that you take into account when buying a smartphone is the battery life. When it comes to iPhones it is common to hear users complaining that the battery life seems to run out quite quickly. When your iPhone runs out of battery you may not always be able to charge it. And so, if you are consistently ending up with very low battery, you might end up considering to change your phone altogether. In truth there are ways in which you can check the battery life of your iPhone, so as to try to ascertain the main reasons why it is being drained away. We shall also be discussing some things you could do to help to prolong it further.

How to check your iPhone battery usage

  • Go into the Settings and select the battery icon
  • The battery usage will be calculated and you will be able to see how much power gets used and for what. These includes each of the apps or services.
  • You can also tap on the option ‘show detailed usage’ and ‘last 7 days’ for more detailed information.

How to check iPhone battery health

The possibility of checking this has been rendered possible as from the iOS 11.3 onwards. As a general rule of thumb, an iPhone battery with over 80% of capacity is considered to be healthy. Batteries with less than 8% are eligible for replacement from the company.

To check your iPhone battery health you will need to:

  • Open the Settings and tap on Battery
  • There is an option named ‘Battery Health (Beta)’. From here you will be able to see the maximum capacity of the battery. This will give you information on the performance level that your iPhone can support as well as compare its current capacity with what it was when it was bought.

What affects your battery usage?

Your iPhone’s battery life is affected by various factors, mostly, the screen’s light, the music which you might be playing in the background, and the chip processing. These are considered as on-screen factors. High background usage on the other hand is typically when you download videos or music, or when you stream for a relatively long period.

Look at the percentage of battery usage of each particular use you are carrying out.

At times the numbers do not correspond to the actual usage though. And this is where you realize that there must be a problem with your iPhone battery.

It is also worth noting that certain apps, like Facebook, are large apps. These typically use a lot of your battery even when working in the background. If you can see a high battery usage in these cases try to avoid using these apps on your iPhone.

Background activity can be reduced. For starters, the less time you spend on an app, the less battery you will be using up. The background activity of an app can be reduced by doing the following:

  • Choose Settings from your Home screen and select ‘General’.
  • Here you will find ‘Background App Refresh’
  • At this point switch off any app which you would like to minimize battery usage for. By doing so you will receive minimal notifications from that app.

Another thing you should do is to remove automatic access to your location. To do this,

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Privacy and got to Location services
  • Here you will see a list of apps which try to use your location and select accordingly

As a last resort, you could force quit apps.

  • Unlock the phone and press the Home button twice
  • Now you will see apps and services that are currently running the background. Swipe the ones you want to close.

In case after all these possibilities you still feel that your iPhone’s battery is draining away too quickly, the last option is to reset your iPhone. To do this,

  • Press the Home button and keep holding it down
  • Once the screen turns off and on again you will see the Apple logo. This means that the phone has been reset successfully.
