According to an article published on Indianexpress, the movie had over exceeded the expectations with earnings of more than Rs. 17 crore in a matter of two days. The movie is based on the floods of 2013 that plagued the people of several districts of Uttarakhand, India’s northern hilly state. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor and co-produced by Ronnie Screwwala, the film released through RSVP Movies, Ronnie’s production house.

Taran Adarsh Shared the Box Office Figures

Taran did share the film’s box office numbers of Kedarnath on Twitter. According to him, the film had a great initial collection, during the weekend, with considerable growth on the second day (34.48 percent), however limited growth on the third day (10.26 percent). Attaining a good collection throughout the week from Monday to Friday is crucial for the overall success of the film. Kedarnath’s growth on Friday was Rs. 7.25 Crore, on Saturday Rs. 9.75 Crore, and on Sunday Rs. 10.75 Crore, totaling Rs. 27.75 Crore.

Based on a Real Incident

The film narrates the love story between a poor, unfortunate Muslim boy working as a porter in Uttarakhand, the holy town of our country, and a Hindu girl. Based on a true incident, the movie did not resort to the usual Bollywood masala formula or item numbers to get a high TRP rating just as run-of-the-mill Indian soaps. The film wooed the audience using the Uttarakhand floods in the backdrop. The story revolves around family disapproval and other problems because of the couple’s religion and background.

Mixed Reviews

Sushant Singh’s and Sara’s Kedarnath received good and average reactions from the audience. According to Shubhra Gupta, the Indian Express film critic, the movie started on a good note, any love story that shows the courage and romance of two young couples challenging the barriers of caste and religion. The film celebrates true love, to be candid. Using the 2013 floods of the state of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath has some major plot twists, giving the movie some real-life dignity and seriousness.

However, Shubhra gave a rating of two in her review because the script is sketchy with the tone of the movie confused. The director was never sure whether to play down a bit, be real-life, or bloat with wailing violins, more so when the water level starts to rise during the floods, and danger looms large on the people of Uttarakhand. Moreover, Kedarnath also faced stiff competition from 2.0, starring Rajinikanth, the dubbed Hindi version scoring well at the box office.
